Join trekking guides, Jose and Nicole Montes, to hear all about trekking off the beaten path in Peru. There’s the ultra popular Inca Trail to Machu Picchu of course, but did you know there are more than 6 alternative treks in the Cusco region, each of which captures the diversity of the Andean landscape? There's the Rainbow Mountain,  Ausangate, Ancascocha and Salkantay to name but a few.

Jose Montes, a veteran trekking guide from Peru and co-owner of Killa Expeditions, will be speaking about the Inca Trail as well as other incredible Peruvian treks that are off the beaten path. Jose will be discussing all the essentials involved with trekking at higher altitudes while highlighting these stunning landscapes with a breathtaking slideshow. He will provide professional recommendations and suggestions on the appropriate gear and clothing needed to hike and camp in the rugged terrain of the Andes. Also, learn about Jose’s efforts to give back to local communities along these trails and opportunities to get involved!

Jose Montes is a 16+ year veteran trekking guide and co-owner of Killa Expeditions. Born in Peru, he grew up hiking the trails outside of Cusco and completed his degree in Tourism. He has always been actively involved in supporting local mountain villages.

Nicole Montes has been an avid outdoor enthusiast and adventurer since she was old enough to wander off into the Santa Monica Mountains where she grew up. She is passionate about ethical, sustainable, environmentally responsible travel and giving back to local communities.

Jose and Nicole met on a Lares Valley Trek he was guiding in 2008, they married in Cusco in 2010. They have since spent years traveling and exploring the world (not only Peru, but all over South America as well as Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and here in the states) and Jose is now pursuing his lifelong dream of sharing his passion for Peru and trekking, inspiring others to explore the unknown, and encouraging people to give back to mother earth and local communities.

Jose and Nicole have two children (guides in training) - a son aged 3 years and a daughter aged 7 months.
