Black Diamond Equipment’s history dates back to the late 1950s, when climber Yvon Chouinard began forging and selling pitons out of the trunk of his car in Yosemite Valley. Chouinard Equipment was soon established in Ventura, California.

Black Diamond Equipment was born on December 1, 1989, when Chouinard Equipment Ltd. was purchased by a group of former employees.

Black Diamond has always led the way in gear and lighting innovation, and continues to set the pace for technological advances, be it ballistic materials in their pack, hydroforming ice tools, carbon fiber shafts in trekking poles or double-faceted reflectors in their lanterns. The result is gear far superior in design and performance to anything else out there.

When you shop at Adventure 16 you’ll find a wide selection of specialty outdoor gear from industry-leading companies like Black Diamond. Companies who walk the walk and spare no amount of effort or innovation in utilizing the latest technologies and materials to produce quality gear. Come in and check us out. You’ll find A16’s staff to be the real deal too!

"Conservation and preservation are foundational to Black Diamond. These tenets are part of the mission of BD. We will always strive to protect access to the mountains, crags and desert landscapes where we pursue our sports."—John Walbrecht, President of Black Diamond.

SGWA volunteers provide the following services:
•    Lead nature walks and programs.

•    Staff the Mill Creek Ranger Station – issuing permits and information.
•    Patrol trails throughout the forest and wilderness to assist visitors, clean up litter and illegal fire rings, and call in emergency medical care.

Each year SGWA volunteers donate over 27,000 hours and have contact with over 100,000 visitors, remove several hundred trees from the trail and provide 60 nature talks and programs.

Although parts of the San Gorgonio Wilderness is still recovering from the 2015 Lake Fire, it receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer. Its 94,702 acres contains over 100 miles of trails that traverse through desert, coastal and mountain environments alongside lakes and streams and through dense forests and meadows that range in elevation from 4,400 feet to the 11,502’ summit of Mt. San Gorgonio.

Anchored by the design genius of company founder and head designer Mike Pfotenhauer, Osprey has long set the standard for making comfortable and efficient, well-made gear. Since 1974, every single pack design bearing the name Osprey has passed through his hands--a legacy and commitment to quality that Adventure 16 is proud to support.

As an outdoor specialty retailer, Adventure 16 is dedicated to providing you with the highest-quality gear and best customer service around. Our outdoor and travel experts can assist you with choosing the right gear for your trip, including measuring your torso for the proper pack fit, customizing the fit (depending on the pack), and utilizing special weights to simulate the feel of a fully-loaded pack or bag. Bring in your stuff and we'll also show you how to pack your backpack for maximum comfort and stability.

“Our mission is to create innovative high performance gear that reflects our love of adventure and our devotion to the outdoors. We succeed when we meet the demanding expectation of our most discerning customers and they are proud to use our packs.”

There’s a ‘Squatch in these woods…

What’s with A16 and Sasquatch? A16 does love to #KeepItHairy with a good #SquatchWatch. What’s not to love? #Squatchy is #wild, #funlovin, #adventurous, #elusive, #mysterious, #legendary and incredibly #amusing.

Have there been any sightings of Sasquatch in Southern California? Glad you asked! According to Southern California Amateur Bigfooters (S.C.A.B.), there are “countless stories of Sasquatch in SoCal dating back to the 1700's. Early Spanish Missionaries wrote about them in their journals. There are about 100 sightings of Bigfoot a year in SoCal alone.”

What about  recent sightings? A quick Google search reveals that #OldSquatchy has been sighted near Riverside, Corona, Camp Pendleton, Anza-Borrego, Warner’s Ranch, Lancaster, Palmdale, Escondido, Fontana, the San Bernardino Mountains, Barton Flats, Twenty Nine Palms, Desert Hot Springs, Hemet…and basically anywhere people gather in the wild to party and drink.

It’s all in good fun. To read more about this elusive creature, try the Cryptozoolog Museum website.

Till then, #StaySquatchyMyFriend!

"With a shared appreciation for the outdoors and in the spirit of continuous improvement, the people of Adventure 16 work together to achieve a harmonious balance among genuine customer loyalty, a meaningful and enjoyable work environment and a financially prosperous company."

Want to become a member of #TeamSquatchy and live the #SquatchLife? #Sasquatch #KeepItWild T-Shirts are available now and Hats will arrive soon to a A16 Store near you.

Pacific Crest Trail Association

The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is an officially designated National Scenic Trail stretching 2,659 miles from the California-Mexico border, through California, Oregon and Washington, to the U.S.-Canadian Border.

“It reveals the beauty of the desert, unfolds the glaciated expanses of the Sierra Nevada, travels deep forests, and provides commanding vistas of volcanic peaks in the Cascade Range. The trail symbolizes everything there is to love—and protect—in the Western United States.”
~ The Pacific Crest Trail Association

The trail can be enjoyed as a day hike, section hike, via horseback or as a long-distance, thru-hike lasting about five months.  However you choose to traverse it, the Pacific Crest Trail offers a unique opportunity to travel through some of the most extraordinarily scenic, wild and remote landscapes of the western U.S.

As a SoCal-based specialty retailer, the Pacific Crest Trail has always been near and dear to A16 and we support the PCT and PCTA in many capacities, including acting as Trail Angels, shuttling hikers, making gear drops, hosting PCT events and educational clinics, raising funds via donations or support of PCT merchandise, and advertising in the PCTA Communicator.

The PCTA champions the needs of the Pacific Crest Trail, dedicated to the notion that their hard work to protect, preserve and promote the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail is a precious gift to future generations.

“The mission of the Pacific Crest Trail Association is to protect, preserve and promote the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail as a world-class experience for hikers and equestrians, and for all the values provided by wild and scenic lands.”

At A16 we feel fortunate to have had a meaningful relationship with the folks at Patagonia since Yvon Chouinard started the company in 1973. And before that, we carried Chouinard climbing equipment.

Patagonia has a well and hard earned reputation as the most environmentally responsible company there is. Although the products they make certainly do damage to the natural environment, their footprint is relatively small for such a large company, and they spend substantial company resources to inspire, teach and push others (including competitors) to protect and conserve wild and not so wild places throughout the world. They also work to reverse damage from those who have gone before us. That includes natural fresh water rivers, lakes and streams.

The Patagonia Small Fry Fitzroy Trout, or as we fondly call it, the “Fishroy” sticker tells this story in a simple, clean and artful way.

Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.
