GOAT CANYON TRESTLE

Goat Canyon Trestle

Author Reena Deutsch is the first person ever to obtain permission to bring organized groups hiking along the tracks to the Goat Canyon Trestle.

In this presentation, you'll take a virtual hike through 16 tunnels and many small trestles while experiencing the breathtaking views in the Gorge and learning the stories behind abandoned tunnels, de-railed cars, and old construction campsites observed on the way along the historic “Impossible Railroad.”

Reena Deutch's book, “San Diego and Arizona Railway – The Impossible Railroad” will be available for purchase and signing after the program.

Hikers crossing Goat Canyon Trestle

Many local hikers know of the landmark Goat Canyon Trestle hidden away in the Anza-Borrego desert’s remote Carrizo Gorge. It’s a strenuous cross-country boulder-scrambling cholla-infested ordeal just to get a glimpse of it from a distance, and getting there by bushwhacking along the bottom of the gorge is a long, unpleasant battle against thorns, dense vegetation, and steep, slippery
scrambling. Why not just hike the easy way... along the railroad tracks? Well, it’s a federal crime of trespass to do so. Still, hordes of adventure-seeking scofflaws do it anyway.

Gorgeous Carrizo Gorge

Author Reena Deutsch will describe her 5-year complicated, frustrating, but eventually successful attempt to obtain permission from the railroad owners to lead organized group hikes along the tracks. She will share a visual compilation of four such hikes through 16 tunnels and over numerous small trestles while relating the stories behind abandoned tunnels, de-railed cars, and old construction campsites observed along the way. Delight in breathtaking views of the ancient, unstable terrain of Carrizo Gorge and the intimidating, but awesome 185’ tall, 633’ long, 87-year old curved wooden Goat Canyon Trestle.
