EVENT: Thru-hiking the John Muir Trail--FREE!

Posted by Adventure 16 | 03.07.2016

The John Muir Trail stretches 212 miles from Yosemite Valley to Mt. Whitney, passing through some of the most dramatic scenery--massive granite peaks, magical alpine lakes, soaring waterfalls and vibrant meadows filled with wildflowers. In this workshop, you will get advice on planning and preparing this hike of a lifetime!

Some of the topics covered include: permits, food resupplies, gear and equipment, trail head logistics, food storage and bears, stream crossings, water purification, campfires, weather, etc. We will also look at topographic maps and discuss questions regarding route planning and trip itinerary: should you hike North to South or South to North? When should you go? Where can you resupply? Where can you camp? How physically demanding is JMT? How many days will you need? What are the hazards? There will also be time for informal discussion, so bring questions!

Hailing from the densely populated Germany, Tobias Nickel first discovered his love for backpacking and the American West while studying abroad in California.

He is currently a senior at the University of San Diego, majoring in environmental studies, philosophy, and political science. He is an active guide for the school's outdoor adventure center, and he is also involved with his local Sierra Club chapter and the PCTA.

In the summer of 2014, Tobias thru-hiked the John Muir Trail, falling in love with the majestic Sierra Nevada. He now has his sights set on the Oregon and Washington sections of the Pacific Crest Trail.
