Backpacking photo tips

I’m starting to notice more and more backpackers carrying camera equipment into the backcountry. I can’t blame them. Sometimes it’s hard to describe some of the beautiful places you’ve been. It’s also nice to be able to look back at the many adventures you’ll go on in a lifetime.

Taking a good photo is easy. Taking an amazing photo can be tough. To help you take a better photo the next time you’re in the backcountry, I got some tips from Stephen Matera, a professional landscape photographer who works with companies including Sierra Designs, MSR, Mountainsmith and Cloudveil.

Matera, 38, of Seattle, is an avid hiker and backpacker who spends most of his time shooting in the Northwest, Alaska and occasionally in the Southwest. Matera spoke to us on the phone in between winter photo shoots to give us these quick tips on taking a good landscape photo.

Hiking Guy Praises A-16

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Praise from Dan’s Journal: “Talked to my Dad tonight and he had gone back to Adventure 16 there in San Diego to show them pictures of my left boot and how it was tearing on the top. The boots in question were purchased a little more than a month ago and were starting to fail in an area where, in my opinion, they shouldn’t be.

“Well, let me tell you, the folks at A-16 were great! They gave Dad a new pair to send me, no questions asked. Once I get the new pair, I’ll send the old pair back so they can see the problem and relay it on to Lowa. Dad said the store manager, Christo, was absolutely great.

“It is so refreshing to deal with a local company that is so customer focused…puts places like REI to shame….and I’m a long time REI customer. For those reading my journal, I cannot endorse A-16 strongly enough..they are fantastic! In fact, when I finish my hike, I’m going to make it a point to go back to A-16 to thank them for all their help and support. A finer outdoor store does not exist! Thanks A-16!”

Adventure 16 to celebrate its 45th Anniversary at Outdoor Retailer

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

San Diego, CA (August 1, 2007) — Forty-five years ago Adventure 16 (A16) was founded when a band of Explorer Boy Scouts and their engineer fathers came up with a better way to build a backpack.

Although the company no longer makes gear, it operates seven outdoor specialty stores and a Wholesale Distribution business in Southern California. The company also is closely involved with the Adventure 16 Donate-a-Pack Foundation, which gifts new and used outdoor gear to dozens of Southern California outdoor programs focused on giving disadvantaged kids a wilderness experience.

“We are very fortunate to have had such a long run in the outdoor industry. We’ve seen a lot change on many fronts in those 45-years for the better and are proud that we have played a small but meaningful role in that change” said John D. Mead, president of A16. Mead went on to say, “We are grateful to our People, to our Customers and our Vendors for the support and friendship they have given us over the years. Those relationships will be what propels us forward in the years to come.”

About 35 A16 industry alumni will gather at A16’s booth at the Outdoor Retailer show on Friday at 4:30 to toast their legacy and Dealers and Vendors are encouraged to join the celebration at 5:00.

Adventure 16 is known as one of the best outdoor outfitters in the United States. Their dedication to providing customers with the finest products, accurate first hand information, and plenty of inspiration, has guided them since their start in 1962. Adventure 16 offers inspiring slide shows and educational clinics at store locations. A-16 has seven retail locations, a wholesale division specializing in accessories for backpacking, camping, climbing and adventure travel, and most recently an online store.

Our team is a close knit group of men and women dedicated to providing professional search and rescue services in any weather, at any time, and on any terrain. The work requires considerable personal commitment, from learning our procedures to attending trainings and, finally, to responding at any time to rescue calls. The time involved, costs, and responsibilities are explained below. You should seriously consider these factors before applying for membership, however if you feel you are qualified, the rewards are well worth the investment you will make as a volunteer rescuer.”
