MISSION TRAILS CAMPGROUND SAVED FROM THE CHOPPING BLOCK

Saved by a last-minute reprieve of the San Diego City Council the Kumeyaay Lake Campground in Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) will now remain open Thursday through Sunday nights through Labor Day, (Friday and Saturday nights during the rest of the year).

Help Mission Trails Regional Park keep the campsite open by booking a stay one of the 46 primitive campsites offered.  Conveniences include hot showers and bathroom facilities in a peaceful setting adjacent to Kumeyaay Lake, only 15 minutes from San Diego’s city center.

Camping reservations for the Kumeyaay Lake Campground may be made on-line at www.mtrp.org/campground

The fee for camping is $14 per night per site. Two tents and up to six people are allowed per site.  For an additional $3 per night, pets are allowed.  One extra vehicle is allowed at each site for an extra $4 per night.  Check in each day begins at 2 p.m.; check-out is 12 noon each day for those not staying over (on Monday for Sunday night campers).

The campsite is located just off of Father Junipero Serra Trail and Mission Gorge Road.  40 miles of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails in the park are easily accessible and well-used by campers during their stay.

Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation President Joe Morse says, “Groups love the proximity of the campground to the City, saving gas and travel time while enjoying a great weekend camping experience.”  According to Morse, many Scout groups use the site to help their members earn important merit badges.

Mission Trails is the largest park in the San Diego park system at over 6,000 acres.  Besides the 40 miles of trails, MTRP includes five mountain peaks, a 14,100-square-ft. Visitor and Interpretive Center, Equestrian Staging Area, the Old Mission Dam, Kumeyaay Lake Campground and other important historical and cultural features, and Lake Murray.

For more information please visit the Mission Trails Regional Park website.
